Introduction:
To assess for changes in the position of the lower eyelid after injection of JUVÉDERMVOLUMA
TM
XC (Allergan, Inc,
Irvine, California) into themidface.
Methods:
A retrospective review of all patients receiving JUVÉDERMVOLUMA
TM
XC (XC) from12/13/2013 - 5/9/2014was
performed. Patient demographics, location and amount of XC used, and pre and post-proceduremarginal reflex distance (MRD2)
were reviewed.The latter was obtained through the analysis of frontal photographs using FACE-gram software (Massachusetts Eye
and Ear Infirmary).The primary outcomemeasurewas a change inMRD2. Patientswere excluded if XCwas diluted or injected
outside of themidface, follow up photographswere not available, or if other filler and/or surgery had been done between facial
measurements.A one-sample t test was used for statistical analysis.
Results:
Eight otherwise healthy patients (16 eyelids) received XC formidface volume augmentation, consisting of 7 females and
1male,with an average age of 56.4 years. Half the patients received a total of 2ml of XC bilaterally,with the remaining receiving
1ml total bilaterally.The 2ml group showed an increase inMRD2 of 0.58mm,whichwas statistically significant having a P value of
0.0035. Similarly, the 1ml group showed an increasedMRD2 of 0.13mm although thiswas not statistically significant.When both
groupswere combined,MRD2was noted to increase by 0.35mm,with P=0.008.
Conclusions:
Although hyaluronic acid filler injection into themidface can be helpful in correcting volumetric defects, it does not
seem to help recruit tissue into the lower eyelid, and, in fact,may increase retraction.
