Reference Values of Lymphocyte Subsets in
Normal Healthy Adult Population in Miami, Florida,

Background:
Although Florida State was ranked the
third highest in reported AIDS cases, there is no data
available on normal ranges of lymphocyte subsets.
Information regarding lymphocyte reference ranges
is essential for assessing human immunodefciency
virus staging and making decisions regarding
opportunistic infection prophylaxis.
Methods:
L
ymphocyte counts were determined by Coulter
AcT5 5-part differential hematology analyzer and
Flow cytometry was performed on FACS Caliber and
analyzed using the Cell Quest Pro software. Data
were analyzed using PASW Statistics.
Results:
The
mean percentage of CD4+ cells was approximately
47% in both men and women. The mean absolute
CD4+ counts in the total population was 1003 cells/µl
(921 cells/µl in men and 1041 cells/µl in women). The
mean percentage of CD8+ cells was 28% in both men
and women. The mean absolute CD8+ counts in total
population was 590 cells/µl (560 cells/µl in men and
603 cells/µl in women). Men tend to have lower CD4+
and CD8+ absolute counts than women. The mean
CD4:CD8 ratio was 1.82, which was signifcant for
women (p=0.049). No age-specifc differences were
observed for any of the parameters.
Conclusions:
Our study confrms that the gender difference plays
a signifcant role when calculating the CD4/CD8
ratios. Women were signifcantly younger than men
(p=0.002) and the age distribution curve was skewed
to the right. Women had a signifcantly higher values
of CD8+ and CD4+ cells (p>0.05). Our subpopulation
had less CD4% but higher NK cell% compared to
the previous study indicating that a difference exists
within different geographical regions.
