Arun Madan
, 1946-2013:
Arun graduated from Reading
University in 1967 and went
on to earn his PhD in physics
from the University of Dundee
in 1973. Arun’s professional
achievements are immense.
While
studying
for
his
PhD, Arun helped discover
hydrogenated
amorphous
silicon which paved the way
for the first thin film transistor. He established Glasstech
Solar, Inc. in 1984 which later became Solar Cells Inc. and
then First Solar. In 1989, Arun started MVSystems, Inc. and
served as President and CEO for 23 years.
Over the course of his career, Arun published over
150
scientific papers and co-authored an advanced
semiconductor textbook that is used at several universities
and has been translated into Russian. Through his work,
Arun led teams of scientists/engineers in multi-disciplinary
programs involving thin film semiconductors and product
development. This includes solar cells, thin film transistors,
nuclear particle detectors, tin oxide coatings, Zinc Oxide,
photosensor imaging arrays, etc. He is also the holder of 14
basic patents on thin film semiconductor technology as well
as advanced vacuum semiconductor deposition systems.
The machines developed at MVSystems Inc. have been
sold to companies and universities all over the world.
